The San Francisco Chronicle reported the announcement on a Tuesday and identified Segal as a childhood classmate of Lurie's at Town School for Boys, a campaign co-chair, and a member of the transition team. ABC7 San Francisco, December 19, 2024, reported Lurie hiring him as "the first-ever chief of housing and economic development," noted the 2022 Musk firing, and said Lurie and Segal "have known each other since they both attended a private middle school in the city."
